The treatment environment at Texas NeuroRehab Center is a unique residential treatment milieu. The children and adolescents are initially separated by cognitive and functional level, then by gender and age, and are therefore entered into a similar peer group.
The child and adolescent programs are housed on four separate, smaller units. One unit is for males and the other three are coed. The units provide a structured environment with 24-hour nursing care and on-call physician coverage.
Staff-to-patient ratios operate at 1-to-3, or 1-to-5, depending on the unit. Staff guide youth though activities of daily living; such as eating, bathing and dressing. Cognitive and behavioral interventions are consistently used to improve and promote appropriate behavior.
Daily routines are adjusted according to the capabilities of each child. Below is a sample of a daily schedule:

The children and adolescents are able to gauge progress and consistently learn appropriate behaviors through performance-based measures. These measures are simple and are used secondary to verbal praise. Additionally, they ensure that the child or adolescent, family and treatment team are on the same page in terms of the child’s behavior and growth.
